Nailing Media Quotes So You Become the Editor’s Favorite Designer
Expert opinion quotes matter more than you think. Let’s break down why generic quotes get cut, and what actually makes editors come back for more.
1) EVERYTHING IS AN AUDITION
Think of every quote request as your big shot to impress. The more unique and specific your response, the more likely it is to get picked and remembered. We’ve had editors reach out asking for specific clients because their quotes are that good.
2) YOU ARE NOT A ROBOT
Don’t let AI flatten your voice. AI can help brainstorm, but don’t stop there. Editors can tell when something is AI generated, and they skip right over it. Add some personal flair. Make it sound like you. See below example of a great quote our client Liz gave to Camille Styles about design trends for the coming year. They loved it so much, they called it out in the headline!
3) No small parts, only small actors
In other words, even when you are giving expert opinions, you should treat it likes it’s a multi-page print feature in AD. Use these quote requests as opportunities to show editors your expertise and your personality. When you make their job easier, they’ll come back to you again and again.
Great quotes don’t just fill space—they help build relationships. When you treat every quote request like a chance to show your expertise, you’re not just increasing your chances of getting featured—you’re positioning yourself as a go-to expert editors trust.
Take a look at the above examples to see how our clients have nailed it, then ask yourself: What would make an editor want to quote me again?
Give them personality. Give them insight. Give them something only you could say.
And pretty soon, you might just become their favorite designer to call.
